About Dr. John R. Gunn
John R. Gunn graduated from Mercer University and after seminary served Baptist churches in Georgia, Tennessee, New York and Indiana. Dr. Gunn authored eight books, including At Jesus' Feet, One Hundred Three Minute Sermons, A Lamp Unto My Feet, Snapshots From the Bible, Facing Life, The Battle of Christendom, and Bulwark Never Failing. His last book, Good Morning, Lord--Devotions on the Hope of Glory was published posthumously in 1977. Dr. Gunn's career as a columnist commenced about 1926 after serving the First Baptist Church of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The messages appeared in a column entitled A Short Sermon for Today, and demonstrated his unique talent to interpret Christian thought in a condensed fashion and in a way attracted people of many faiths. The column continued for 36 years and then for 15 years more beyond his death. The following is an excerpt from the bulletin of the First Baptist Church of Fort Wayne, written in 1952:
The Fort Wayne church gave Dr. Gunn the honorary title of Pastor Emeritus. Some years later, the columns were used as radio meditations by the Protestant Radio Television Center of Atlanta, Georgia. At its peak, there were more than 2,000 stations that carried Dr. Gunns daily devotionals, and this program continued for about twelve years. Many of Rev. Gunns books are available for purchase. |
